Fran O'Brien's football career started in the early days with the Holyoke High Purple Knights in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and then as a Michigan State Spartan in East Lansing, Michigan. After starring with the Spartans, he became the third draft choice of the Cleveland Browns. In April 1960 he was traded to the Washington Redskins. It became his chance to play everyday and develop into a talented lineman. In 1966 he was traded to Pittsburgh and retired from the Steelers in 1969 after three seasons.
