The chili dog is alive and well at Hard Times, where it's called a Coney Dog and slathered with the house Cincinnati red chili, shredded Cheddar, and chopped raw onions. It'll bring tears to your eyes, and not just because of the onions. If you're old enough, you'll remember a simpler time--before cholesterol and the food police. Hard Times dishes up a couple other kinds of chili, too: authentic Texas-style with coarse chunks of beef, and a fiercely spicy vegetarian version. An offbeat turkey chili, occasionally on tap, is worth a try, especially with a dollop of sour cream. All can be had solo with decent cornbread or plumped up with beans or spaghetti. Chili over pasta is a Midwestern thing and worth experiencing, if only once, though for some it becomes a habit.
