Kamehachi means 8 Turtles in Japanese. The turtle and the eight both symbolize long life and good luck in Japan.
Kamehachi of Tokyo was originally founded in 1967 and is widely recognized as the first sushi bar in Chicago. Many Chicagoans tried their first "maguro" at the modest Old Town sushi counter. Kamehachi moved two blocks south in 1994 to a new location, where it has remained family-owned for three generations. We remain dedicated to the same quality and reputation that has made us a favorite sushi spot for more than 30 years. We invite you to experience the unique flavors, textures and artistry of Japanese cuisine -- whether you are an expert, or a beginner just starting out. From your favorite teriyaki dish to your favorite sushi, we want to continue providing you with a great dining experience for many year more generations to come. Welcome and enjoy. The "Eight Turtles" tradition lives on!
